Millions of people all over the world smoke cigars.  Its popularity is more in the western countries and Middle Eastern countries on the globe.  However there are many who may not even have the basic idea about the cigar anatomy. Every cigar comes with an open end called the foot which is the end you will light while smoking. You will cut the closed end so that you can inhale delicious smoke.

Cigar composition

Ordinarily the cigar would be composed of three types of materials.  These are fillers, binder, and wrapper.  The filler is the guts whereas the binder keeps the filler together.  The wrapper holds everything together.  Since the top of the tobacco plant produces the strongest flavor, the filler is mostly from that part of the plant.  On the other hand some companies prefer to use the bottom part of the tobacco plant since it provides the best of the burning properties.

Premium cigars are made of long fillers that are constructed using full leaves.  The leaves are picked and stored and kept in good condition for long time. The cigar burns smoothly and very evenly. Then there is the short filler that consists of leaf clippings that are the residues of the long filler products.  However the basic characteristics of the premium cigar are that they are handmade and combine different leaves as filler.

One type of premium cigar is puro that is made of tobaccos originating in one country.  These are rare species of cigars and found only in handful. Breton Corojo Vintage is an example of the Dominican puros. Premium cigars come in two basic shapes namely, Parejos that is straight sided and Figurado that is irregular shaped cigar.

Dimensions of cigar

The two determinants of dimension of cigar are its length and breadth.  One end is cut and it is called the “cap” whereas other end that is lighted is called the “foot”. There are differences in sizes too.  Short cigars are less than 5.5 inches in length while long cigars could be 8 inches in length.  Thick cigars have greater than 47 ring size while thin are less than 42 ring size.

Commonly used dimensions of the cigars are Robusto that means short and thick, cigarillo that means short and thin, Lonsdale that means long and thin and Churchill that means long and thick. In between stands the corona that is medium in all respects. However the specifications are not air-tight.  A cigarillo of one brand can slightly differ from the cigarillo from another brand.  Some shapes that come in between the major shapes are Toro, Pnatela, Rothchild, and Presidente.

Disparities galore –

Whereas the above mentioned species are most common there are many others.  In fact there are disparities galore in various types of cigars.  There are also similar differences between cigar accessories of various brands.  The humidor is used to keep the cigar in good condition for long and manufacturers of various brands add one or more of their own flavors to the cigar.  Thus you find a host of other types of cigars like Gorda, Grande, Larga, and Doble and so on in the market.  Of course as the end user it is your priority to choose the best one for you.
